It has one major downside, however, and that is weight. Local Kine is equipped with our SuperThin (ST) Glass technology. Glass is also mostly superior when it comes to scratch resistance, a big plus when you are out in the field with limited options for cleaning your glasses in adverse conditions. Local Kine is built with thicker temple material to give you greater coverage for long days in the sun. Good as the newer “plastic” lenses are, as in the other models, glass lenses are hard to beat for clarity and overall performance. So, when Maui Jim offered us a review of one of its latest sunglasses featuring super-thin glass lenses, we eagerly accepted. We also found their incorporated bifocals a bonus, and that they worked well for fishing as well as being stylish (see the review in TCFF 266 – Ed). The clarity of vision, depth of colour and glare elimination are all outstanding. The wraparound frame and stylish shape ensure my sunnies fit perfectly and are secure on my head even through rigourous exercise. These particular models make use of Maui Jim’s most-advanced lens material that features optics nearly as clear as glass but much lighter, making them not only light and a pleasure to wear but also very effective in polarising.
